Background
Dr. Chu grew up in San Diego, California. He attended UC Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology — a foundation that deepened his understanding of pain, sensation, and the nervous system as they relate to dental care. He went on to attend the UCLA School of Dentistry, where he graduated with the Outstanding Performance in Endodontics Award, recognizing exceptional clinical performance in the specialty during dental school.
During his time at UCLA, Dr. Chu participated in a community service trip to China, where he provided dental care to underserved patients — an experience that reinforced his commitment to accessible, compassionate care.
Specialty Training
Dr. Chu completed his endodontic residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, one of the country's leading programs for specialty dental education. He earned a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD) alongside his specialty certificate, with training that emphasized evidence-based care, advanced imaging, and microsurgical technique.
After completing his residency, Dr. Chu returned to Southern California to join the team at Saddleback Valley Endodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and an active member of the AAE, ADA, and CDA.
Clinical Philosophy
Dr. Chu approaches endodontic care with the same mindset he brought to his academic and athletic pursuits: disciplined preparation, precise execution, and continuous learning. He believes that a well-informed patient is a more comfortable patient, and takes time in every consultation to explain findings clearly and honestly before discussing treatment options.
His background in neurobiology informs his particular interest in pain management and case-specific anesthetic approaches — especially for patients who have had difficulty achieving adequate anesthesia in the past.
Personal
Outside the office, Dr. Chu is a former nationally ranked junior tennis player. He stays active through pickleball, basketball, rock climbing, and golf, and enjoys board games and escape rooms. He credits his competitive athletic background with teaching him to remain calm under pressure — a quality that translates directly to the precision demands of endodontic surgery.
